Phil Miller covered three seasons of Twins baseball, but that was at a different ballpark for a different newspaper. Now Miller returns to the baseball beat after joining the Star Tribune as the Gopher football writer in 2010, and he won't miss the dingy dome for a minute. In addition to the Twins and Gophers, Miller covered the Utah Jazz and the NBA for six years at The Salt Lake Tribune.
Some leftover thoughts from Saturday's 4-2 loss to Tampa Bay for the Twins:
* Brian Dozier gave the Twins one of their only two runs with a fifth-inning homer off David Price. But Dozier also grounded into a key double play in the second inning and took a called third strike with two runners on base in the seventh.
“I guess for the past two months I’ve been all over the place with my hands, my load, everything, and I'm trying to get back to the way I was right when I got called up here,” said Dozier, who’s now batting .237 with a .274 OBP and .337 SLG. “Bruno [Rochester hitting coach Tom Brunansky] sent me some film and stuff like that. Just comparing my swing, it’s nothing like it was when I first got up, so yeah, trying to get back to the way the it was.”
* Ben Revere has been working daily on his throwing arm, and he might have made his best throw of the season tonight. Playing center field, with Denard Span getting a break, Revere hustled into the gap and threw out Ryan Roberts trying to stretch a single into a double in the second inning.
“It was a good throw, right on the money,” Manager Ron Gardenhire said. “He’s been working on it every day. He’d better throw ‘em right there; that’s where he throws them in practice. So good for him.”
* After going 2-for-3 against David Price, Justin Morneau is now hitting .215 against lefties, up from .077 not too long ago.
* Scott Diamond starts Sunday, as the Twins look to avoid a sweep, and I wouldn’t want to be standing close to Gardenhire if the Rays jump out to another early lead.
“These guys are swinging in the first inning,” Gardenhire said. “That’s where we have to be better tomorrow. If we go back out there tomorrow, shame on us if we let them whack the ball all over the place in the first. We’ve got to make better pitches in the first inning."
