Phil Miller covered three seasons of Twins baseball, but that was at a different ballpark for a different newspaper. Now Miller returns to the baseball beat after joining the Star Tribune as the Gopher football writer in 2010, and he won't miss the dingy dome for a minute. In addition to the Twins and Gophers, Miller covered the Utah Jazz and the NBA for six years at The Salt Lake Tribune.
Happy Memorial Day everyone, especially our veterans.
The Twins and A’s will be wearing commemorative hats, and there will be a host of other honorary events, as the teams open a three-game series at Target Field. Both teams are riding five-game losing streaks, so something has to give.
Scott Diamond returns to the mound for the Twins coming off his first loss of the season, and Oakland counters with lefthander Travis Blackley, who was claimed off waivers from the Giants on May 15. Blackley has posted a 4.09 ERA in seven relief appearances this year, though all three of his outings for the A’s have been scoreless.
Update: A's manager Bob Melvin told reporters it's 50/50 whether Manny Ramirez will be joining the team on Wednesday, the first day he's eligible to return from his drug suspension. ... Brandon Inge is back from the disabled list today after being out with a strained groin.
Update: Jason Marquis cleared waivers and is now a free agent, Twins GM Terry Ryan said.
