Phil Miller covered three seasons of Twins baseball, but that was at a different ballpark for a different newspaper. Now Miller returns to the baseball beat after joining the Star Tribune as the Gopher football writer in 2010, and he won't miss the dingy dome for a minute. In addition to the Twins and Gophers, Miller covered the Utah Jazz and the NBA for six years at The Salt Lake Tribune.
The Twins announced that they've claimed two pitchers on waivers -- LHP Matt Maloney from the Reds and RHP Jeff Gray from the Mariners.
Maloney, 27, made eight appearances (two starts) for Cincinnati this year, going 0-3 with a 9.16 ERA. He had 13 strikeouts and four walks in 18 2/3 innings. In 14 games for Class AAA Louisville, including 13 starts, he went 7-1 with a 2.99 ERA.
Gray, 29, was claimed off waivers by the Mariners from the White Sox in May. In 30 combined appearances between the two teams, he posted a 4.28 ERA with 23 strikeouts and 21 walks in 48 1/3 innings pitched.
