La Velle E. Neal III has covered baseball for the Star Tribune since 1998 (the post-Knoblauch era). Born and raised in Chicago, he grew up following the White Sox and hating the Cubs. He attended both the University of Illinois and Illinois-Chicago and began his baseball writing career at the Kansas City Star. He can be heard occasionally on KFAN radio, lending his great baseball mind to Paul Allen and other hosts. Mark Rosen borrows him occasionally for WCCO-TV.
For the third straight afternoon, Alex Rodriguez worked out on the field in front of Yankees coaches and trainers. Indications are that he's not quite ready following knee surgery, but could play tomorrow.
The Twins are out on the field for early outfield drills. A few players are working on throws home.
UPDATE
Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said outfielder Michael Cuddyer felt much better on Saturday as he continues to recover from a sore neck. Cuddyer will hit the field before Sunday's game and take some swings. If all goes well, he will be available off the bench Sunday and will start Monday.
The Twins are being extra careful because Cuddyer aggravated the injury while the team was Detroit. Cuddyer has missed eight games.
Infielder Alexi Casilla said he will resume some on-field activities on Sunday for the first time since he re-injured his right hamstring on Aug. 12 in Cleveland.
Jim Thome is available off the bench tonight. He's been bothered by a sore back.
As for A-Rod, the slugger is expected to play Sunday.
Tsuyoshi Nishioka is a late scratch due to back spasms. Matt Tolbert has replaced him in the starting lineup.
