Phil Miller covered three seasons of Twins baseball, but that was at a different ballpark for a different newspaper. Now Miller returns to the baseball beat after joining the Star Tribune as the Gopher football writer in 2010, and he won't miss the dingy dome for a minute. In addition to the Twins and Gophers, Miller covered the Utah Jazz and the NBA for six years at The Salt Lake Tribune.
DETROIT -- Once again, Twins manager Ron Gardenhire was lamenting his team's defense after Tuesday's 8-7 loss to the Tigers.
The Twins made two errors, but Gardenhire felt another could have been charged to reliever Phil Dumatrait in the eighth inning.
In Detroit's six-run fifth inning, Brennan Boesch hit a bouncer to shortstop Matt Tolbert's right. Tolbert charged the ball and made a quick throw to third base, trying to get Casper Wells, but the throw sailed into the Tigers dugout.
This led to the funniest Tweet of the night, by @TwinsBatgirl: "Tolbert, pretty sure this baseball thing isn't going to work out, tries to impress the dodgeball scouts."
Folks, sometimes you have to laugh.
Gardenhire said, "That was the right decision [by Tolbert]; he just made a poor throw."
Not wanting to burn out righthanded reliever Alex Burnett, Gardenhire turned to lefthander Jose Mijares in the seventh. His five batters went: single, walk, flyout to deep center (runner advances), sacrifice fly, single.
"He threw some sinkers that were actually really good sinkers, but as you saw, he misfired a little too much," Gardenhire said. "First time out [since coming off the DL], give him a little bit of a break. We need him. We need him to come in and throw the ball and get some outs for us."
Phil Dumatrait got another turn with the score tied 7-7 in the eighth. Danny Worth singled, and then Austin Jackson bunted right back toward the mound. Dumatrait gambled, trying to get the out at second, but bounced his throw and everyone was safe.
"He’s gotta get the out at first base," Gardenhire said. "I heard our catcher [Rene Rivera] yelling, 'Two! Two! Two!'
"We always talk about is getting an out. Let’s not be Superman out there. I think we tried a little too hard there and we have to get the out at first base."
Gardenhire added: “We scored enough runs to win. Defense and pitching have gotta hold them down.”
