Phil Miller covered three seasons of Twins baseball, but that was at a different ballpark for a different newspaper. Now Miller returns to the baseball beat after joining the Star Tribune as the Gopher football writer in 2010, and he won't miss the dingy dome for a minute. In addition to the Twins and Gophers, Miller covered the Utah Jazz and the NBA for six years at The Salt Lake Tribune.
CHICAGO -- The Twins optioned catcher Steve Holm to Class AAA Rochester after Wednesday's 3-2 victory over Chicago, saying they will make a corresponding roster move before Friday's game in Boston.
No, Joe Mauer will not be ready to come off the disabled list by then, and the team did not make a trade or sign free agent catcher Bengie Molina.
The Twins plan to promote either Danny Lehmann or Rene Rivera from Rochester. Neither is on the 40-man roster, but the team currently has 39 players on the 40-man.
Basically, the Twins just want to try something different. Holm batted .118 (2-for-17) and didn't impress the team defensively. Meanwhile, Drew Butera, an outstanding defensive catcher, is batting .111.
Rivera, 27, is batting .200 for Rochester but has previous major league experience with the Mariners.
Lehmann, 25, is viewed as another top defensive catcher. He started the year at Class AA New Britain and batted .462 (6-for-13) before moving to Rochester when Holm was promoted to the majors. Lehmann is batting .280 (7-for-25) for Rochester.
