FORT MYERS, FLA. -- Justin Morneau said today that his visit to a doctor Tuesday was a previously scheduled appointment, and he's still not cleared to play in games.

Morneau said he continues to make progress but has no timetable for his return. The team continues to express confidence that he'll be ready for the April 1 season opener in Toronto.

"Everything's still going good," said Morneau, who flew to Pittsburgh for Tuesday's appointment. "It wasn't like we're going to run up [to the doctor] if something happened. It was something already planned. It's been planned for a while.

"We're going to continue what we're doing, and when you see me in the lineup, that's when I'm cleared for games. There's no timetable, there's nothing. Test results -- everything's still improving. It's not all the way there yet, but it's a lot closer than it was."

Asked about the final hurdle, Morneau said, "If I'm getting through every day symptom-free, without any headaches, without any fogginess, when we have that more than one or two days in a row, whatever it is, we'll go and hopefully get cleared. When that is, I can't tell you. I have no idea."

Morneau, who hasn't played in a game since he suffered his concussion July 7, said he'll continue with the same workouts he's been doing. He has done all the fielding drills, faced live pitching, etc.

"Pretty much everything except no game action," he said. "No activity where I could be in danger, where there's still a risk of injury."

Morneau, 29, has been told repeatedly that he needs to be 100 percent healed from this concussion. The worst-case scenario, doctors have learned, is for athletes to sustain a second concussion while they are recovering from an earlier one.

Asked about being ready for Opening Day, Morneau said, "My desire is always to play, but the doctors told me they're not going to put me in any kind of danger. People say 'Oh, it's baseball, how much danger is there?' Well, who would have thought I'd be out this long from breaking up a double play."
