YOUR GUIDE TO THE TWIN CITIES
La Velle E. Neal III has covered baseball for the Star Tribune since 1998 (the post-Knoblauch era). Born and raised in Chicago, he grew up following the White Sox and hating the Cubs. He attended both the University of Illinois and Illinois-Chicago and began his baseball writing career at the Kansas City Star. He can be heard occasionally on KFAN radio, lending his great baseball mind to Paul Allen and other hosts. Mark Rosen borrows him occasionally for WCCO-TV.
This is a bad Seattle team, and the Twins should be thinking about sweeping the Mariners and heading into the off day coming off a 4-3 road trip.
Scott Baker won his fifth straight decision and the Twins have won each of his last seven starts. That's interesting because he hasn't been dominant during that run but has been effective. Twins manage Ron Gardenhire thinks it's because Baker is throwing any pitch at any time in the count.
Danny Valencia hit the first triple of his career. He had 11 in 481 minor league games. I know he has just two homers but his willingness to hit the ball up the middle and to the opposite field is encouraging,
Randy Flores made his Twins debut by stranding two inherited runners in the seventh. but he gave up a hit and walk in the eighth, setting the stage for Matt Guerrier's heroics.
