YOUR GUIDE TO THE TWIN CITIES
La Velle E. Neal III has covered baseball for the Star Tribune since 1998 (the post-Knoblauch era). Born and raised in Chicago, he grew up following the White Sox and hating the Cubs. He attended both the University of Illinois and Illinois-Chicago and began his baseball writing career at the Kansas City Star. He can be heard occasionally on KFAN radio, lending his great baseball mind to Paul Allen and other hosts. Mark Rosen borrows him occasionally for WCCO-TV.
Twins righthander Kevin Slowey left today's game with discomfort in his right triceps. He will be re-evaluated on Sunday.
Slowey left the game after giving up four runs over three innings to the Angels. He was seen huddling with pitching coach Rick Anderson and one of the trainers in the dugout after he was replaced by Jeff Manship.
Slowey has battled a sore elbow this season but it cleared up in recent weeks and he rebounded to no-hit the A's for seven innings last weekend. Fans booed when Slowey was replaced with Jon Rauch, and Rauch gave up hits and runs to ruin the no-hitter.
Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said at the time that it's important to keep Slowey's long-term health in mind.
J. J. Hardy is starting at short today, but he might not start tomorrow as the Twins try to be careful with his sore left wrist.
Denard Span is seeing 3.82 pitches per plate appearance, which is third among regulars on the team. But after waling 17 times in April he's walked just 20 times since then.
Span said pitches are getting ahead in the count against him more than ever. To combat that, he's trying to be ready to hit the first pitch, and his walks have suffered because of it. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said it's one of those things a hitter goes through when pitches make adjustments against him.
How about the mess in Kansas City? Edwin Jackson threw seven pitches before the game was rained out, and the Sox aren't happy that umpire crew chief Joe West started the game in the first place. Because of the FOX window, the Royals and Sox must play an old-school doubleheader at 6 p.m. tonight. Chicago was scrambling to find a starter for the second game since Jackson has been burned.
The teams will play three games in a span of 18 hours. The Sox are getting screwed. I'm sure Twins fans feel sorry for them :)
Justin Morneau mashed pitch after pitch into the seats during early batting practice but is not ready to take the next step in his recovery from a concussion suffered on July 7.
Sorry this is late. I had this ready to go before the internet went haywire in the pressbox and the blog crashed. After I dropped enough expletives to make Jim Souhan look at me funny, I rewrote the blog.
