Cuddyer option is first order of business for Twins

When the World Series ended Wednesday, the clock began ticking on some key offseason decisions for the Twins.

They have until Monday to decide whether to pick up right fielder Michael Cuddyer's $10.5 million option for 2011 or pay him a $1 million buyout. They also have an exclusive negotiating window through Nov. 19 with pending free agents Orlando Cabrera, Joe Crede, Ron Mahay, Carl Pavano and Mike Redmond.

"We have to address those five one way or the other," Twins General Manager Bill Smith said Thursday, leaving open the possibility one or more could be retained.

The free-agent market officially opens Nov. 20, which is also the deadline for teams to reset their 40-man rosters.

While there has been no talk of a long-term extension for Cuddyer, beyond 2011, he's open to it.

"I would definitely like to be here my whole career," said Cuddyer, who hit .276 with 32 homers and 94 RBI this year. "It's a perfect fit both ways. I love the city. I look forward to playing in that new stadium, and I like to think I'm a good fit for the Twins, too."

Perkins update

The Twins held a conference call Thursday with Glen Perkins and legal counsel from the players union to see if the sides could avoid the grievance the pitcher has posed to recoup service time.

If Perkins follows through with the grievance, the hearing would be held in New York late next week.

Smith declined comment. Perkins, who has had numerous exams on his elbow and shoulder, is expected to be 100 percent for spring training, and the Twins view him as a candidate to either start or relieve next season.

Scouting awards

Twins senior advisor Terry Ryan received the Roland Hemond Award, for leadership and service to the Arizona Fall League. Twins scout Marty Esposito was inducted into the Texas Scouts Association Hall of Fame. Mike Radcliff, the Twins vice president of player personnel, will be inducted Saturday into the Midwest Scouts Association Hall of Fame.
