Game 6 recap: New York 7, Philadelphia 3

Last update: November 4, 2009 - 11:31 PM

MVP HIDEKI MATSUI, NEW YORK

Back in the starting lineup with the switch back to the American League ballpark, the designated hitter set a Series record with six RBI in what might be the upcoming free agent's last game with the Yankees. For his efforts, he also was named Series MVP, after he hit .615 with three homers and eight RBI.

TURNING POINT

Phillies righthander Pedro Martinez looked as though he might wiggle out of a third-inning jam when he struck out Alex Rodriguez with the bases loaded for the second out. But down 0-2 in the count, Matsui lined a single to center, driving in two runs to put New York up 4-1.

BY THE NUMBERS

13 Strikeouts in six games for Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard, setting a Series record. Howard struck out on three pitches vs. reliever Damaso Marte to start the eighth inning.

51/3 Scoreless innings this World Series for Yankees closer Mariano Rivera, who finished out Game 6 by recording the final five outs.

.423 Series batting average for New York captain Derek Jeter.
