Heavily invested

If everyone comes back besides the free agents, the Twins already will have an estimated salary figure of $78 million.

Last update: October 13, 2009 - 12:08 AM

This is not our suggestion for next year's Opening Day Twins roster, it's simply a view of the team's current inventory -- how the team would look if players returned healthy from the disabled list and the current free agents (Carl Pavano, Orlando Cabrera, Mike Redmond, etc.) are not retained.

It helped show us that the Twins' 25-man Opening Day payroll would approach $80 million if they dealt just with this current inventory -- without cutting or trading anybody -- and let their free agents leave. The Twins are not disclosing their 2010 payroll estimate, but there have been indications it could approach $85 million to $90 million in their first year at Target Field.

Since recent seasons have shown the importance of the entire 40-man roster, we have included 15 additional players to show the team's depth or lack thereof. Where indicated, the salary figures are estimates, based on service time. Players with between zero and three years of service make an amount close to the major league minimum, $400,000. After three years, players are eligible for arbitration, which quickly bumps salaries past the $1 million mark. Players are eligible for free agency after six years of service.

Go Twins!

I made this championship belt for the push to the '09 Division Title. Gladden offered to buy it; I wanted a trade for one of his rings. He declined.
