UPDATE: The Twins have parted ways with Jack Goin, who was the director of baseball research. Get ready for some moves within the baseball operations department, as Derek Favley and Thad Levine have had eight months to evaluate their staff.

Falvey and Levine will run the department until a replacement has been hired.

Bartolo Colon on Sunday made his third start for the Twins, and it was his best. He went 61/3 innings, giving up three runs on eight hits and a walk with one strikeout.

After the game, Colon said he mixed in more sliders and change ups. And the stats backed that up.

On Sunday, Colon threw four seam fastballs about 16 percent of the time, down from 34 percent in his previous outing, July 24 against the Dodgers. About 11 percent of his pitches (I'm rounding up and down here) were sliders. He didn't throw a single slider against the Dodgers. He threw a few more change ups (13 percent) than he did in LA (nine).

Colon did throw his sinking fastball 61 percent of the time, which has been his money pitch in recent years. By staying around the plate and mixing in different pitches, Colon was able to pitch into the seventh inning.

"He knows he has to at least show those at times to keep it in the mix," Twins manager Paul Molitor said.

Now, the Texas lineup is more dangerous than Oakland's, so it will be interesting to see what approach he will take tonight. But he's coming off of an outing in which he was functional, which really is the best the Twins can hope for.

Future Hall of Famer Adrian Beltre has 20 of his 3,002 hits against Colon, fourth most of of any pitcher he's faced.

There will be a roster move after tonight's game to make room for Kyle Gibson, who will officially be called up from Rochester in time to start tomorrow.

There could be another roster move in the near future, as Hector Santiago is back. Santiago gave up one run over 52/3 innings for Class AAA Rochester yesterday and looks ready to be activated. He's supposed to meet with the staff today to figure out his role going forward.
