As Doug Bernier worked his way through the minors, he began learning to play multiple positions.

To remember what his responsibilities were at each position, he would write them down. Eventually, he had quite a study aid.

"I started to have notes and notes, and my wife [Sarah] said, 'Why don't you just make a website?' " Bernier said. "I said I didn't know how to make a website. And she said, 'I'll learn.' "

The result was probaseballinsider.com, a website that offers free tips and advice to younger players. For example, former major league player Juan Pierre offers tips on stealing third base, while Garrett Richards discusses how to throw a curveball. The website also has links to equipment reviews and links to purchase equipment.

Bernier said the website was launched about four years ago and recently passed 200,000 page views.

"I wanted to pass along tips and knowledge that I have picked up and other professional players have picked up to younger players and coaches and parents to, hopefully, not go through some of the struggles I did when I was younger," Bernier said.

"What we're doing is teaching the game the way that we have been taught to play the game."

Bernier has played only 42 major league games, and knowing how to play multiple positions was one reason why he was called up on Tuesday from Class AAA Rochester to replace the injured Eduardo Nunez on the active roster.

A popular player at Rochester, Bernier was pulled by manager Mike Quade in the second inning of the Red Wings game against Indianapolis.

"It's a special feeling every time you hear that," Bernier said. "I'm just excited to be up here and to help out any way I can."

Twins manager Paul Molitor was so impressed with how Bernier carried himself during spring training he was kept on to the very end of camp.

"Dougie is one of those guys who is a joy to have on your team," Molitor said. "He's one of the most professional people you would want to have around in terms of preparation, attitude, energy he brings, all those intangibles.

"But the guy can play. He's a journeyman, obviously. He doesn't have a lot of big-league time. We've been fortunate to have him around for protection here."

As for Nunez

Nunez was injured April 30 during batting practice.

"When it happened, we all saw it," Molitor said. "He tried to take a couple more swings, [but] he got out of the cage. We thought a couple days would give him the opportunity to get back on track without being disabled."

And Nunez was headed in the right direction before Tuesday, when he had a setback.

"We had to get another player and give him time to get back on track," Molitor said.

Nunez is batting .409 in eight games.

Fein feels better

Righthander Casey Fien, on the disabled list because of a mild shoulder strain, hopes to be cleared so he can begin a throwing program Thursday.

Fien has been working on strengthening a weak muscle in his right shoulder and has been pleased with the results.

"I haven't had any pain the last two days," he said, "so that's a good sign."

Without Fien, the Twins' primary setup men for closer Glen Perkins will be righthander Blaine Boyer and lefthander Aaron Thompson.

Righthander Tim Stauffer has started light throwing in his recovery from a right intercostal strain.
