NEW YORK - Major League Baseball officials have collected more than 1,700 broken bats over the past 2 1/2 months and begun meeting with manufacturers to discuss quality control.
Commissioner Bud Selig has expressed concern over the increase in broken bats among maple models. But he can't ban maple bats unilaterally because their use is subject to collective bargaining.
Baseball's safety and health advisory committee, which includes players' union officials, said Tuesday it collected every broken bat from July 2 through Sunday. The manufacturer and model were recorded, along with the bat's dimensions, the game situation when it was broken, the area in which the bat fragments landed, and video footage from MLB.com.
A U.S. Forest Service lab, a wood-testing agency, and two professors will analyze the data and design tests.

I made this championship belt for the push to the '09 Division Title. Gladden offered to buy it; I wanted a trade for one of his rings. He declined.
