AMERICAN LEAGUE

Tigers’ Sheffield hits historic homer
DETROIT 14, OAKLAND 8: Gary Sheffield’s second home run of the night — a grand slam — was the 250,000th homer in major league history, and the Tigers beat the Athletics on Monday night in Detroit. Sheffield drove in five runs, including his 13th career grand slam. Magglio Ordonez, Miguel Cabrera and Mike Hessman also went deep for the Tigers, who won their third game in a row. Rajai Davis and former Gopher Jack Hannahan each drove in two runs for Oakland, which has lost five of its past seven games.

• LOS ANGELES 12, NEW YORK 1: Brandon Wood hit two homers and drove in three runs, and Vladimir Guerrero and Sean Rodriguez also homered to lead the Angels over the visiting Yankees. Yankees catcher Ivan Rodriguez and the Angels’ Torii Hunter were ejected after a bench-clearing scuffle in the sixth inning. Rodriguez took an open-handed swing at Hunter after getting shoved in the back by the former Twin, causing both benches to clear.

• BALTIMORE 14, CLEVELAND 3: Aubrey Huff hit a grand slam to cap a seven-run sixth inning, and the Orioles beat the visiting Indians and ended an eight-game losing streak. Luke Scott, Adam Jones and Ramon Hernandez also homered for the Orioles, who had lost 13 of 14 games. Jones ended an 0-for-16 skid with three hits and four RBI. Asdrubal Cabrera went 3-for-3 and drove in two runs for the Indians, and Shin-Soo Choo had two hits, extending his hitting streak to 12 games.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Reds rally in ninth to beat Brewers
• CINCINNATI 5, MILWAUKEE 4:
Jeff Keppinger’s two-run double in the top of the ninth lifted the Reds over the Brewers. Wilkin Castillo had three hits, and Joey Votto hit a solo homer for the Reds, who entered the ninth trailing 4-2 but rallied against Milwaukee closer Salomon Torres. Jason Kendall hit a two-run homer, and J.J. Hardy had a solo shot for Milwaukee. The Brewers’ lead in the NL wild-card race shrunk to three games over the Phillies.

• PHILADELPHIA 8, FLORIDA 6: Jayson Werth hit a three-run homer, Jimmy Rollins had three hits and three steals, and the Phillies beat the visiting Marlins. The Phillies closed within 1½ games of the NL East-leading New York Mets. Joe Blanton pitched five shaky innings to earn his first victory since Aug. 2.

• HOUSTON 3, PITTSBURGH 2: Pinch hitter Mark Saccomanno homered on the first pitch he saw in the major leagues, helping the Astros beat the visiting Pirates. Saccomanno hit a solo shot in the fifth inning, triggering a three-run inning for the Astros. The next four batters got hits, including RBI singles by Miguel Tejada and Lance Berkman.

• SAN DIEGO 4, LOS ANGELES 0: Adrian Gonzalez hit a two-run homer off former teammate Greg Maddux and the Padres beat visiting Los Angeles, ending the Dodgers’ eight-game winning streak. Cha Seung Baek combined with two relievers to four-hit the Dodgers. Andre Ethier had three of the Dodgers’ hits.

I made this championship belt for the push to the '09 Division Title. Gladden offered to buy it; I wanted a trade for one of his rings. He declined.
