MILWAUKEE – San Diego Padres righthander Chris Young flirted with a perfect game Sunday, not bad for a guy who missed nine weeks after a scorching Albert Pujols line drive broke his nose.
Young retired the first 23 Brewers in order before Gabe Kapler’s eighth-inning homer. Pinch-hitter Mat Gamel doubled with one out in the ninth for Milwaukee’s only other hit in the Padres’ 10-1 victory.
In the eighth, Young got Prince Fielder and Corey Hart to pop out before throwing a first-pitch ball to Kapler. Catcher Nick Hundley then called for a slider. Young insisted on his “bread and butter” fastball, and Kapler hit it into the left-field bleachers.
“It’s been a long road for me,” said Young, who missed from May 21 to July 29 after having surgery.
As for shaking off Hundley on the eighth-inning home-run pitch: “I learned my lesson,” he said.

I made this championship belt for the push to the '09 Division Title. Gladden offered to buy it; I wanted a trade for one of his rings. He declined.
