AMERICAN LEAGUE

White Sox avoid sweep at Boston
• CHICAGO 4, BOSTON 2:
Jim Thome hit a two-out, two-run homer off Tim Wakefield in the first inning Sunday at Fenway Park, and the White Sox held their lead over the Twins in the AL Central. Thome doubled and scored on Paul Konerko’s double in the sixth, and Alexei Ramirez added a run in the ninth on Joe Crede’s double. Righthander Gavin Floyd held the Red Sox to a run on seven hits over 6u2154 innings to win his fifth consecutive decision.

• TAMPA BAY 10, BALTIMORE 4: Jason Bartlett had four hits, including his first homer in more than a year, as the Rays swept three games from the Orioles at St. Petersburg, Fla.

• TORONTO 6, NEW YORK 2: Blue Jays righthander Roy Halladay held the host Yankees to two runs — on homers by Alex Rodriguez and Jason Giambi — over seven innings to win his fourth consecutive start. Scott Rolen homered for the Blue Jays.

• TEXAS 4, LOS ANGELES 3:  Josh Hamilton and Marlon Byrd hit home runs for the Rangers at Anaheim, Calif.

• SEATTLE 6, CLEVELAND 4: Adrian Beltre homered twice for the Mariners, who swept three games from the Indians at Cleveland.

• DETROIT 4, KANSAS CITY 2: Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run homer in the sixth, then hit a bases-loaded, two-run double in the eighth to lead the host Tigers past the Royals.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Werth leads Phillies to Wrigley split
• PHILADELPHIA 5, CHICAGO 3:
Jayson Werth doubled, homered and drove in three runs for the Phillies, who gained a split of their four-game series with the Cubs at Wrigley Field. Lefthander Jamie Moyer, at age 45 the oldest player in the majors, held the Cubs to two runs on eight hits in 51/3 innings for his 12th victory.

• NEW YORK 6, FLORIDA 2: Carlos Beltran homered leading off the second, and Nick Evans and David Wright hit back-to-back home runs in the third for the Mets at Miami. Pedro Martinez held the Marlins to two runs on seven hits in six innings for his 214th victory.

• LOS ANGELES 8, ARIZONA 1: Diamondbacks righthander Brandon Webb, going for his 20th victory, lasted 31/3 innings against the Dodgers at Phoenix. Webb was tagged for homers by Andre Ethier and Casey Blake in the first, and wound up giving up eight runs on eight hits, walking five and striking out only three.

• HOUSTON 3, ST. LOUIS 0: Ty Wigginton hit his 12th home run of August, tying Jeff Bagwell for the team record for the month, and the host Astros swept the three-game series with the Cardinals.

• WASHINGTON 8, ATLANTA 4: Aaron Boone’s three-run homer highlighted a five-run eighth for the host Nationals.

• CINCINNATI 9, SAN FRANCISCO 3: Joey Votto went 4-for-4 and drove in four runs to lead the host Reds.

• SAN DIEGO 2, COLORADO 1: Righthander Jake Peavy collected a season-high 13 strikeouts over eight shutout innings for the host Padres before Trevor Hoffman blew the save. Luis Rodriguez came back with a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the ninth.

LEAGUE NOTES

• The Diamondbacks acquired infielder David Eckstein from the Blue Jays. Eckstein was the 2006 World Series MVP for St. Louis.

• Dodgers second baseman Jeff Kent will have surgery on torn cartilage in his left knee and could return by the end of the season.
