Streets named for Carew, Puckett find new homes next to Target Field

Signs now identify street blocks near Target Field as Kirby Puckett Place and Rod Carew Drive.

Just in time for Tuesday’s All-Star Game, segments of two streets in Minneapolis near Target Field now commemorate Twins legends Kirby Puckett and Rod Carew.

The stretch of 7th Street between 2nd Avenue North to just north of Target Field honors Kirby Puckett, the Hall of Fame outfielder who led the Twins to World Series titles in 1987 and 1991.

The portion of 2nd Avenue between 6th and 7th Streets pays tribute to Rod Carew. The block includes the corner featuring the bronze statue in the likeness of the 18-time All-Star in his familiar crouch.

Black and white signs to honor the Twins greats have been posted on their streets, but neither is being officially renamed. Two other streets are already named in their honor and will stay the same until new names are determined, city spokesman Casper Hill said.

Kirby Puckett Place is between 5th and 4th Streets by the former Metrodome. Rod Carew Drive is south of Twins’ old home between 6th and 7th Streets.
