Chart: Pete Rose's top five All-Star moments

  • Updated: July 11, 2014 - 9:16 PM

Rose was invited for the first time, included on a National League team dubbed by many as the greatest squad ever fielded. At Met Stadium, Rose started at second base in a lineup that included Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Juan Marichal, Ernie Banks, Willie Stargell and Joe Torre. Rose walked once and struck out twice.

After the NL stormed back to tie the score with three runs in the bottom of the ninth, Rose provided one of the game’s signature moments in the 12th inning at Riverfront Stadium in his hometown of Cincinnati. With two out, Rose plowed over AL catcher Ray Fosse to score the winning run in a 5-4 victory.

Back in the starting lineup at Royals Stadium for the first time since his initial invitation in 1965, Rose scored the NL’s first run and spurred a 7-1 victory.

Rose had his best All-Star Game, statistically, at Milwaukee’s County Stadium, in a 6-3 NL victory. Batting leadoff and playing almost the entire game, he went 2-for-4 with two singles and added a ninth-inning sacrifice fly to score Larry Bowa.

Getting the nod one last time on the cusp of breaking the all-time hits record, Rose had a quiet day at the Metrodome — grounding out to second in his only at-bat — but had the opportunity to stretch his career of All-Star appearances to 20 years apart.
