Morneau slips to 2nd in voting for final NL All-Star roster spot

  • Updated: July 9, 2014 - 8:08 PM

Former Twin Justin Morneau, the early leader in fan voting for the final spot on the National League All-Star roster, has fallen behind Chicago's Anthony Rizzo.

Justin Morneau's return to Target Field is certainly no cinch.

The former Twins slugger now with Colorado has fallen to second in fan voting for the final spot on the National League All-Star team. Morneau was the early leader in balloting but has slipped behind Chicago's Anthony Rizzo, according to MLB.com. Atlanta's Justin Upton, Washington's Anthony Rendon and Miami's Casey McGehee are also up for consideration.

For the American League, last year's All-Star game winning pitcher Chris Sale of the White Sox continues to lead Anaheim's Garrett Richards, Detroit's Rich Porcello, Cleveland's Corey Kluber and Houston's Dallas Keuchel for the final AL spot.

Morneau is also believed to be a candidate for the final NL Home Run Derby selection. Both announcements will be made Thursday.

Voting for the final All-Star Game roster positions continues through 3 p.m. on Thursday here. Fan votes on Twitter will count from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday.

The Home Run Derby is Monday at Target Field, with the All-Star Game set for Tuesday.
