Three Twins postgame thoughts from LEN3: Correia, Dozier, Mauer

Posted by: La Velle E. Neal III Updated: May 31, 2014 - 6:15 PM

Here are three thoughts following the Twins' 3-1 loss to the Yankees:

CORREIA HANGS ON: Kevin Correia recovered from bases-loaded, no out jam in the first. He struck out Mark Teixeira - who later left the game with a sore right wrist - then got Brian McCann to ground into a double play. In the second, he got out of a two on, one-out jam by getting Brendan Ryan to ground into a double play. ``I knew I could get out of it,'' Correia said. ``That was something I was able to do a lot last year. That's the difference between this year and last year.'' Perhaps Correia is overdue for a few double play balls.

STOLEN BASES: Opponents have been successful on 85 percent of their stolen base attempts against the Twins. With Jacoby Ellsbury's steal in the eighth inning today, opponents are 9-for-9 against Josmil Pinto. But it's not always the catcher's fault. A lot of time the pitcher is too slow to the plate or doesn't hold runners well enough. On Saturday, Pinto's throw was in time to get Ellsbury, but Brian Dozier failed to get in the right position to catch the ball. The ball hit Ellsbury then deflected out to center field. Dozier looked at video following the game and said he has to fight to get in the right spot in that situation.

MAUER: He struck out with two on in the first and two on in the third - two huge scoring chances. He also hit into a double play in the fifth. Mauer is batting .185 over his last 13 gams and looks awful at the plate right now,
