Athletics update

This is the first game of their first road trip of the year, a nine-game swing through Minnesota, Seattle and Anaheim. They went 44-37 away from home last season, best in the American League, en route to the AL West title. ... They had an odd first week: One game was rained out, their first in Oakland since 1998; one game was postponed because of wet grounds after the grounds crew did not cover the field overnight despite incoming rain; and they played a doubleheader. ... Their starting pitchers have allowed only seven runs entering Sunday, in 30 innings. Scott Kazmir, who starts Monday, did not allow a run in 7⅓ innings in his A’s debut last week vs. the Angels. ... New closer Jason Johnson, acquired from Baltimore, gave up the winning run in his first two appearances.

Twins update

They are 2-2 in home openers at Target Field, and have lost their past two. Their last home-opener win was in 2011, a 2-1 victory over Oakland. ... They have lost six straight games against the A’s and were outscored 68-23 in seven games last year, including 29-9 in three games at Target Field. ... The Twins have won the season series against Oakland only once since 2007, going 6-3 in 2010. ... This will be the first time C Kurt Suzuki has faced Oakland, the team that drafted him in the second round in 2004 and for which he played six seasons. ... Statistical oddity: IF Jason Bartlett is 4-for-4 in his career against Oakland closer Jim Johnson. ... Entering Sunday, their bullpen’s cumulative 7.79 ERA was the worst in the American League.
