Worley gets eight outs, gives up seven runs in 11-3 loss to Rays

– It’s not yet clear who will win the final spot in the Twins rotation. But it has become apparent that it won’t be Vance Worley.

Last year’s Opening Day starter, given one more chance to impress the Twins’ decision-makers, was battered from the start of Tuesday night’s 11-3 loss to Tampa Bay. By the time Wil Myers’ third double in three innings ended Worley’s night, the righthander had retired only eight batters while giving up seven runs.

“It’s out of my control,” Worley said of his roster status after he gave up 11 hits, seven of them doubles. “All I can do is work, and hope things go my way.”

They never did Tuesday, and by the time it was over, Worley’s ERA in four spring appearances (and 10⅔ innings) had ballooned to 13.50, with four or more runs surrendered in three of them.

Worley gave up a leadoff double to Myers and a one-out walk to Ben Zobrist in the first inning, then got Evan Longoria to look at strike three. “I felt good” at that point, Worley said.

And then? “Things happen,” he said. “I really don’t even know how to elaborate on that.”

James Loney followed with a two-run double, Matt Joyce singled him home and Desmond Jennings doubled, too. Three more hits in the second inning produced two runs, and after retiring the first two hitters in the third, Worley gave up four consecutive hits to score two more.

“Everything went well in the bullpen, I took it out there, and I wasn’t able to get the ball down in the zone,” he said.
