La Velle E. Neal III at the winter meetings

ORLANDO – We're back for another year, and the winter meetings already are in full swing with rumors flying around the lobby of the Dolphin Hotel, where the masses gather most of the time.

The Angels are desperate for starting pitching and might trade slugger Mark Trumbo to find some. They are also in the hunt for Bronson Arroyo, a Twins target.

The Twins have swung and missed on signing catchers. They offered A.J. Pierzynski a contract, but he went to the defending champion Red Sox. They were willing to give Jarrod Saltalamacchia a two-year deal, but he got three years from the Marlins and went back to his home state. They looked into J.P. Arencibia but backed off, and he will likely sign with Texas. The Twins might deal for a catcher, or go for someone such as John Buck. But they like Josmil Pinto's potential and just might hand him the keys to the pitching staff.

Former Twin Juan Rincon is at the winter meetings. Rincon, 34, pitched for York of the Independent League in 2013. In 2012, he split time with independent ball and Class AAA Salt Lake. He hasn't pitched in the majors since 2010. His best years were with the Twins from 2001 to 2008. He served a 10-game suspension in 2005 for violating the MLB drug policy. He wants back in and has contacted several teams, including the Twins.
