Metal detectors planned for major league ballparks

  • Updated: November 23, 2013 - 12:31 AM

The future of attending baseball games — the near future — appears to include passing through metal detectors.

Major League Baseball is moving in that direction. Security director John Skinner said Friday that the league is ready to recommend the use of walk-through metal detectors at games.

“It’s the reality, unfortunately, of this world,” Skinner said during a symposium at the Harvard Law School. “Ultimately, it will happen.”

The Twins are aware that such a plan is in the works. But Kevin Smith, the club’s senior director of corporate communications, said Friday that more details need to be learned.

“This is all so new that there’s nothing that we can intelligently comment on other than there are discussions underway,” Smith said. “We just don’t know what we are going to do yet.”

MLB is scheduled to make a presentation to all clubs during the winter meetings next month in Florida.
