If the Twins get any pitching in this series, they could ride Joe Mauer to a couple of victories. Mauer is batting .423 with three home runs and 19 RBI at Tropicana Field — his highest batting average in any road stadium at which he has played more than four games … Justin Morneau was pulled for a pinch hitter in the eighth inning Sunday but manager Ron Gardenhire said he just wanted to get Morneau off the fake grass in Toronto, because more is coming in St. Petersburg. … The Twins lost two of three games at Tampa Bay last season and are 8-13 there since 2006. … Mauer is 12-for-28 against Hernandez (the former Fausto Carmona) and Trevor Plouffe homered off him the last time they met.

In one of the surprising developments of the season, the Rays are scoring runs. They have four players with at least 40 RBI. Matt Joyce has hit 14 home runs. James Loney is batting .313. Evan Longoria is being Evan Longoria, batting .289 with 17 homers and 49 RBI — but he is nagged by plantar fasciitis in his right foot. He might play a couple games as the designated hitter this series. … The Rays are coming off a three-game sweep of the White Sox and have won four in a row overall to move into a tie for second in the division. … Former Twins and Rays shortstop Jason Bartlett is contemplating a comeback and has spoken with Tampa Bay.
