Pressly chides himself for not following conditioning program

Twins reliever Ryan Pressly has avoided landing on the disabled list, but just coming down with a slightly sore shoulder last weekend taught him a big lesson.

Pressly reported soreness in his triceps during the weekend while the Twins were in Washington but that felt fine a day later. The soreness was actually in the back of his right shoulder.

He blames himself for slacking off in his in-season conditioning work.

“Right now I have to kick my butt and do my shoulder program,” said Pressly, a Rule 5 draft pick who is 2-0 with a 1.24 ERA and has been a revelation.

Pitchers stretch and strengthen their arms to help them get through the season. Pressly said he usually follows his program twice a week but has done it only once over the past two weeks.

“Not smart,” Pressly said. “Not smart at all. Didn’t get much sleep [Monday] night, thinking about it. You never want any problems with anything, but a shoulder is more complicated than an elbow problem.”

Pressly threw in the bullpen before Tuesday’s game with no problems and the Twins expect him to be available Wednesday.

The Twins bullpen was short another arm Tuesday. Jared Burton remained sore after the series in Washington. The Twins had hoped he would be ready Tuesday as well.

Time to sign

The Twins have reached tentative agreements with several players they selected last week in the first-year player draft.

Those close to signing include third-round pick Stuart Turner, a catcher from Ole Miss; sixth-round pick Brian Navaretto, a catcher from Arlington Country Day School in Jacksonville, Fla., righthander Brian Gilbert, a seventh-round pick from Seton Hall and 10th-round pick C.K. Irby, a righthander from Samford. The agreements are pending physicals.

The Twins continue to negotiate with first-round pick Kohl Stewart of St. Pius X High School in Houston and hope to have an agreement soon. Stewart, in fact, might travel to the Twin Cities by the end of the week to undergo a physical as negotiations near completion.

The Twins believe they have a good chance to sign their 25 picks from the draft, which lasted 40 rounds.

Slight edge, Philly

As of now, the Phillies have gotten the better end of the deal involving Ben Revere because Revere is still in the majors.

The Twins sent Revere to Philadelphia during the offseason in exchange for righthander Vance Worley and righthanded prospect Trevor May. Revere has struggled with the Phillies, batting .244 with a .288 on-base percentage.

“It’s one of those adjustment things to see what they’ve got,” Revere said. “It’s tough but I just have to deal with that. No matter what you do, just have to keep fighting.”

Worley was the Twins’ Opening Day starter but went 1-5, 7.21 and was sent to Class AAA Rochester. Worley on Tuesday gave up seven earned runs over 5⅔ innings to Toledo as he fell to 1-3 with the Red Wings with a 4.74 ERA. May is 5-2 with a 3.92 ERA in 11 starts at Class AA New Britain.
