Injured reliever Wood to be examined in Twin Cities

Twins righthander Tim Wood, who has spent the season on the disabled list because of shoulder soreness, will be examined in the Twin Cities on Friday.

He underwent a magnetic resonance igaming exam Wednesday in Rochester, N.Y., and Twins doctors want to take a look at it before they figure out what to do with him, Twins assistant GM Rob Antony said.

Wood appeared to have a spot in the Twins bullpen locked up in spring training but reported soreness in his shoulder during the final week of camp. The current problem is in a different area of his shoulder.

Rehab starts

Twins righthander Cole De Vries, making a rehabilitation start at Class AAA Rochester, gave up six runs on 11 hits in four-plus innings Wednesday. He had the go-ahead to throw 90 pitches but was pulled from the game against Durham after 77 pitches.

“He was fine [healthwise],” Antony said. “He just didn’t pitch well.”

De Vries was ticketed for the Twins rotation but came down with forearm tightness late in camp.

Righthander Samuel Deduno, also coming back from injury, gave up four runs over 6⅓ innings Thursday on five hits and two walks with eight strikeouts. He pitched five shutout innings before giving up two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh.

Etc.

• Outfielder Byron Buxton hit a walk-off grand slam for Class A Cedar Rapids on Thursday, bringing the Kernels from three runs down in the ninth inning to beat Burlington 7-6. It was the sixth home run of the year for the Twins’ 2012 first-round pick.

• For the third year in a row, the Twins will play host to the RBI World Series. RBI stands for Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities and is a Major League Baseball program encouraging kids to play. The event will take place Aug. 3-14.
