TWINS UPDATE

Are the Twins moving into “surprise team” category after holding their own against some quality opponents? “This Twins team is a little better than people are giving them credit for,” Texas’ Lance Berkman said. “If you look at their lineup, they’ve got some guys who can hurt you.” … Joe Mauer went 0-for-4 on Sunday and is in an 0-for-16 slump that has dragged his average down to .302. … Justin Morneau is 5-for-10 against Scherzer with three home runs. ... This is the start of a 10-game road trip to Detroit, Cleveland and Boston.

TIGERS UPDATE

Verlander is throwing only 92 miles per hour (gasp!) because of a blister on the side of his thumb that is affecting how he throws the ball. But the 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young Award winner was able to hold Kansas City to one run over seven innings in his most recent start Thursday. … Sanchez is coming off a Tigers-record 17 strikeouts on Friday against Atlanta. Mickey Lolich held the record of 16. … Omar Infante is 15-for-30 against Pelfrey, and Miguel Cabrera is 7-for-14 against Diamond.
