Phil Miller covered three seasons of Twins baseball, but that was at a different ballpark for a different newspaper. Now Miller returns to the baseball beat after joining the Star Tribune as the Gopher football writer in 2010, and he won't miss the dingy dome for a minute. In addition to the Twins and Gophers, Miller covered the Utah Jazz and the NBA for six years at The Salt Lake Tribune.

Saltalamacchia's home run carries Red Sox past Twins

FORT MYERS, FLA. -- "If you're going to give them up, you may as well give up big ones," Liam Hendriks said Friday night after living up to that sentiment. Hendriks allowed three runs over four innings, including a home run by Jarrod Saltalamacchia that carried deep into the right field stands at jetBlue Park, and the Red Sox shut out Minnesota 4-0.

Aaron Hicks doubled, walked and made two athletic catches in center field, but the Twins managed only seven hits off Boston starter Felix Doubront and a trio of relievers and never seriously threatened. In fact, no Twin reached third base until the eighth inning.

Hendriks, locked in competition with Cole De Vries and P.J. Walters for a spot in Minnesota's starting rotation, surrendered a first-inning run when Jacoby Ellsbury led off with a double, Jonny Gomes beat out a ground ball to third, and Dustin Pedroia grounded into a double play.

In the fourth inning, Pedroia singled, and after a force out, Saltalamacchia extended his arms to reach an 88-mph sinker over the middle of the plate, his first home run of the spring.

Brian Duensing allowed an eighth-inning run on two hits and a sacrifice fly by Dan Butler.

The Twins return home to Hammond Stadium on Saturday to face Pittsburgh.
