American League

Indians roll behind Blake's 7 RBI

• CLEVELAND 13, TEXAS 9: Casey Blake homered twice and matched a career high with seven RBI before Ben Francisco hit a tiebreaking two-run homer that powered the Indians over the Rangers in Arlington, Texas. Blake hit two-run homers in the second and third innings, then added a three-run double in the fourth that made it 8-3. The seven RBI are the most by an American League player this season.

• BALTIMORE 6, BOSTON 3: Adam Jones broke a tie with a three-run double in the eighth inning, and the Orioles overcame another home run by Manny Ramirez to beat the visiting Red Sox and avoid a four-game sweep. Ramirez homered in a third consecutive game and reached 502 for his career, two behind Eddie Murray for 23rd place in baseball history.

• LOS ANGELES 4, SEATTLE 2: Ervin Santana gave up two runs in 7.2 innings to lead the Angels past the host Mariners.
After beating Detroit with his third career complete game last week, Santana nearly bested himself against Seattle. He gave up six hits and struck out three, and didn't face a three-ball count on a batter until two outs in the seventh inning. Jarrod Washburn lost his third consecutive decision and has only one victory since the second week of the season.

• OAKLAND 3, DETROIT 2: Bobby Crosby hit an RBI single in the ninth inning to lift the Athletics over the Tigers. Kurt Suzuki led off the ninth with a sharp single off Francisco Cruceta and went to second on Jack Hannahan's sacrifice. He scored easily as Crosby's hit traveled to the wall in right-center field.

National League

Fielder paces Brewers' victory

• MILWAUKEE 4, ARIZONA 3: Prince Fielder homered leading off the eighth and helped scratch across another run with an unlikely steal of third as the Brewers beat the Diamondbacks in Milwaukee. Fielder, who went 3-for-4, drove a fastball by Arizona reliever Doug Slaten deep to left-center field where it bounced off a stadium support just below a "Vote Brewers" All-Star banner to give Milwaukee its first lead, 4-3. It was Fielder's third homer in the past four games and ninth this year. The Brewers have won four in a row.

• ATLANTA 7, FLORIDA 5: John Smoltz's return to the mound as a closer didn't go the way he wanted. Still, the Braves actually managed to win a close game. Yunel Escobar hit the first game-ending homer of his career, a two-run shot in the 10th inning, and the Braves rallied to beat the Marlins.

• PITTSBURGH 5, ST. LOUIS 4: Jason Michaels hit a tying pinch-hit grand slam in the seventh, and Jason Bay drove in the winning run an inning later as the Pirates beat the Cardinals in St. Louis.

• CHICAGO 7, SAN DIEGO 6: Carlos Zambrano was as animated as he was good, helping Chicago to its eighth consecutive victory by edging the host Padres. Zambrano allowed three runs in the first inning before settling down. He legged out three hits to tie his career high and raise his average to .366. He hit a standup RBI triple that tied the game in the fourth, his third career triple.

• LOS ANGELES 8, COLORADO 2: Jeff Kent, Andre Ethier and Matt Kemp hit home runs, Derek Lowe pitched eight strong innings for his first victory in more than five weeks, and the Dodgers handed the Rockies their eighth loss in a row. The Rockies, who lost their 13th in a row on the road, were missing left fielder Matt Holliday, right fielder Brad Hawpe and shortstop Troy Tulowitzki — who combined for 89 home runs and 352 RBI and batted a cumulative .308 last season.

• SAN FRANCISCO 10, NEW YORK 2: Brian Horwitz hit the first home run of his career, a two-run shot in the Giants' six-run first, and Ray Durham also drove in three runs to help San Francisco beat the sluggish Mets. Randy Winn also homered with a leadoff drive in the first, when Aaron Rowand doubled to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. Durham hit a two-run double in the initial inning as the Giants knocked New York starter Oliver Perez out after he got only one out.

League notes

Nationals' Zimmerman needs rest

• Washington third baseman Ryan Zimmerman has a small tear in his left, non-throwing shoulder and will require more rest. Zimmerman has missed the past seven games.

• Cleveland righthander Jake Westbrook (right elbow inflammation) was scratched from his scheduled start today and is headed back to the disabled list.

• Boston DH David Ortiz missed a second consecutive game after undergoing an MRI on his ailing left wrist. Red Sox manager Terry Francona said Ortiz will be placed on the 15-day disabled list because of a partially torn tendon. He will not need surgery.
