A look at the power-free four

Last update: May 27, 2008 - 7:53 AM

Joe Christensen takes a closer look at four potential power producers for the Twins who have combined for two home runs:

MICHAEL CUDDYER

At-bats: 129

Home runs: 1

Before this year: One homer for every 29.1 at-bats.

Comment: Batted .339 in spring training but missed three weeks early in the season because of a dislocated finger and has struggled to regain his form.

MIKE LAMB

At-bats: 142

Home runs: 1

Before this year: One homer for every 35.6 at-bats.

Comment: Showed power as a part-time player, but he has yet to live up to the expectations the Twins had after they handed him the everyday job at third base.

JOE MAUER

At-bats: 160

Home runs: 0

Before this year: One homer for every 43.5 at-bats.

Comment: It's time for people to accept Mauer for what he is -- a top defensive catcher and on-base machine -- and stop harping on what he isn't.

DELMON YOUNG

At-bats: 189

Home runs: 0

Before this year: One homer for every 48.2 at-bats.

Comment: Some believe he has grown too comfortable with an inside-out swing. He will need to turn on inside pitches to tap his true power potential.
