La Velle E. Neal III has covered baseball for the Star Tribune since 1998 (the post-Knoblauch era). Born and raised in Chicago, he grew up following the White Sox and hating the Cubs. He attended both the University of Illinois and Illinois-Chicago and began his baseball writing career at the Kansas City Star. He can be heard occasionally on KFAN radio, lending his great baseball mind to Paul Allen and other hosts. Mark Rosen borrows him occasionally for WCCO-TV.

Twins spring training: Final workout day before the exhibition schedule begins

Posted by: La Velle E. Neal III Updated: February 22, 2013 - 10:56 AM

Today's workout will be a short one, as the Twins will hold review sessions on the things they've worked on over the previous nine days. There will be two rounds of batting practice, not three, so they could be done about an hour earlier than usual. If you are in town and are thinking about coming over, consider yourselves warned.

Anthony Swarzak (cracked ribs) said he's still about a week or so away from getting on a mound, but he's made a lot of progress and can see the light at the end of the tunnel. He'll be several weeks behind most of the other pitchers in camp. Not just the the weeks here, but the month or so before camp opened when pitchers start loosening up their arms. Swarzak has lost all of that development time.

THE LINE

Vegas is not a fan of the Twins. One sports book has their over/under for wins at 64.5. Ouch.

TIGERS ARE SET

Longtime Detroit seamhead John Lowe reports that Tigers manager Jim Leyland already has named his Opening Day starting lineup - provided the Twins start a righthander on Apr. 1 at Target Field.

Austin Jackson, CF
Torii Hunter, RF
Miggy, 3B
Prince Fielder, 1B
Victor Martinez, DH
Andy Dirks, LF
Jhonny Peralta, SS
Alex Avila, C
Omar Infante, 2B

Justin Verlander, RHP

Wow. And the Twins still aren't sure who will start at four positions.

WBC ROSTERS

Finally, the World Baseball Classic rosters have been finalized, and the Twins have players on eight national teams.

Australia - James Beresford, IF

Canada - Andrew Albers, LHP; Justin Morneau, 1B

Dominican Repbublic - Samuel Deduno, RHP;

Italy - Drew Butera, C; Chris Colabello, 1B

Netherlands - Shairon Martis, RHP; Tom Stuifbergen, RHP; Bert Blyleven, RHP (pitching coach)

Puerto Rico - Jose Berrios, RHP; Eddie Rosario, 2B.

USA - Joe Mauer, C; Glen Perkins, LHP

The rosters are sprinkled with players with former Twins connections, like Dan Serafini, Luke Hughes, Nick Punto, Allan De San Miguel, Justin Huber, Brad Thomas, Ryan Rowland-Smith, Jesse Crain, Rene Tosoni, Dennys Reyes, Loek Van Mil, J.C. Romero, R.A. Dickey, Jose Mijares and Juan Rincon.
