COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. - On his tour of baseball's Hall of Fame on Monday, Rich (Goose) Gossage claimed to have hit only three batters intentionally in his major league career: Ron Gant, Al Bumbry and Andres Galarraga.
Gossage, who will be inducted into the Hall later this summer, recalled the circumstances that led him to bean Montreal's Galarraga in 1988, saying that before the game, Cubs manager Don Zimmer warned the pitching staff not to let Galarraga beat them.
"I'm in the eighth inning, Galarraga's up, first base is open, the game's on the line with two guys on, and I'm thinking back to the meeting before the game," Gossage, now 56, said with an impish grin. "I was in my delivery when I thought, 'I'm not taking any chances.'
"Boom! ... I saved four pitches and drilled him as good as I can drill them. Right in the ribcage. You could hear the air go out. It was beautiful."

I made this championship belt for the push to the '09 Division Title. Gladden offered to buy it; I wanted a trade for one of his rings. He declined.
