Rays knock Angels out of first place

• TAMPA BAY 8, LOS ANGELES 5: Carl Crawford hit a three-run homer to lead the Rays to a sweep of the Angels at St. Petersburg, Fla. Tampa Bay rallied with two outs in the sixth inning, scoring four runs off Justin Speier on Crawford's homer and a wild pitch.

• OAKLAND 12, TEXAS 6: Emil Brown hit a three-run homer for the Athletics at Arlington, Texas. Frank Thomas drove in two runs for Oakland to give him 1,695 RBI, tying him with Cal Ripken for 21st all-time. A's starter Rich Harden gave up five runs on eight hits in 3 2/3 innings in his return from the DL. Oakland now leads the West.

• KANSAS CITY 4, BALTIMORE 0: Righthander Brian Bannister held the Orioles to two singles in eight innings. The host Royals beat the O's for the first time in 13 meetings going back to July 2006.

• SEATTLE 6, CHICAGO 3: Raul Ibanez hit a two-run homer in the third inning for the host Mariners. Seattle scored five runs on nine hits in 3 2/3 innings against Gavin Floyd, who carried a no-hitter into the ninth inning against the Twins on Tuesday.

National League

Uggla's two homers pace Marlins

• FLORIDA 5, WASHINGTON 4: Dan Uggla hit his 10th and 11th home runs for the NL East-leading Marlins at Washington. Uggla, who hit a grand slam on Saturday, put the Marlins ahead with his second homer of the game, a solo drive in the eighth inning.

• NEW YORK 8, CINCINNATI 3: Carlos Beltran and Ryan Church hit back-to-back home runs in the fifth inning for the host Mets.

• MILWAUKEE 5, ST. LOUIS 3: Ryan Braun hit two solo home runs and the Brewers' new closer by committee -- Salomon Torres and Brian Shouse in this case -- held on for a victory at Miller Park.

• CHICAGO 6, ARIZONA 4: Pinch hitter Daryle Ward hit a two-run double in the eighth inning to rally the Cubs, who finished a three-game sweep of the NL West leaders at Wrigley Field. The game was delayed 58 minutes by a chilly rain, causing scheduled starters Randy Johnson and Carlos Zambrano to be held out.

• SAN DIEGO 6, COLORADO 1: Scott Hairston and Khalil Greene homered for the host Padres against the Rockies.

• SAN FRANCISCO 4, PHILADELPHIA 3: Backup catcher Steve Holm's go-ahead, two-run homer -- the first of his career -- off former Twins pitcher J.C. Romero lifted the host Giants.

League notes

• Brewers manager Ned Yost said he would go to "closer by committee" after giving Eric Gagne the heave-ho. Gagne had nine saves but was tied with the Cardinals' Jason Isringhausen, also relieved of his closer's role, for the majors' lead with five blown chances. Gagne had given up two runs in Saturday's loss to St. Louis.

• Brewers starter Yovani Gallardo will have surgery on a torn ligament in his right knee and likely miss the rest of the season.

• The Rangers put righthander Kevin Millwood on the 15-day DL because of a strained right groin.

• The Orioles called up infielder Alex Cintron, the Indians called up former Twins outfielder Jason Tyner, and the Padres acquired right-handed reliever Bryan Corey from the Red Sox.

• The Rockies sent lefthander Mark Redman, who won 12 games for the Twins in 2000, to Class AAA Colorado Springs. Redman was 2-3 with a 7.84 ERA this season for Colorado.
