TWINS UPDATE

A day off Wednesday didn't cool Joe Mauer. He went 2-for-3 against the White Sox, raising his average to .346. He is batting .419 (26-for-62) over his past 17 games. ... The Twins have hit 17 home runs this season and allowed 36. At least their pitchers have done a good job minimizing the damage, however. Of those 36 dingers, 29 have come with the bases empty.

RED SOX UPDATE

David Ortiz has an eight-game hitting streak through Thursday's game against the Tigers and had hit .417 (15-for-36) with three homers and eight RBI in that stretch, raising his average from .172 to a season-high .239. The Twins won't face Boston ace Josh Beckett, but there's nothing easy about the four starters they will face. Boston starters were 5-3 with a 1.69 ERA in 10 games before Buchholz gave up four runs on five hits Wednesday against Detroit.
