COOPERSTOWN'S CLASS OF 2013

What: Baseball Hall of Fame announcement

When: 1 p.m. Wednesday

TV: MLB Network. Coverage begins at 11 a.m.

On the ballot: 37 candidates (24 newcomers and 13 holdovers). The newcomers include Craig Biggio, Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Mike Piazza, Curt Schilling and Sammy Sosa. The holdovers include St. Paul native and former Twin Jack Morris, Jeff Bagwell, Tim Raines and Lee Smith.

Voting: Done by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. The deadline for ballots was Dec. 31. A candidate must receive at least 75 percent of the vote for induction.

Last year: Former Reds shortstop Barry Larkin was the only candidate to be named on 75 percent of the ballots cast. Morris received the highest percentage of the vote among players who were not elected. He was named on 66.7 percent of the 573 ballots cast, falling 48 votes short of election.

The quote: "I don't see how I can vote for a known steroid user given the integrity clause in the instructions. Any player directly linked to steroids won't get my vote. So until the Hall updates the voting guidelines, if I vote for a cheat it will be for a good cheat, not a known cheat." -- Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune

Induction day: July 28 in Cooperstown, N.Y.
