• BOSTON 8, NEW YORK 5: Daisuke Matsuzaka labored through five innings, issuing six walks, Sunday night at Fenway Park before the overworked Red Sox bullpen bailed him out. Yankees starter Phil Hughes was even worse, lasting a career-low two innings and allowing a career-high seven runs. Boston's David Ortiz, batting .070 in 43 at-bats, was held out of the starting lineup and was to work with hitting coach Dave Magadan. "Just trying to figure things out for a minute so I can go back to being Big Papi again," Ortiz said.
• CLEVELAND 7, OAKLAND 1: Cliff Lee's quick and efficient pitching in the wind, rain and snow helped the host Indians end Oakland's five-game winning streak. After a 48-minute delay at the start, Lee limited the A's to a run on two hits over eight innings and struck out eight without a walk. Grady Sizemore and David Dellucci hit two-run doubles for Cleveland in the eighth.
• TAMPA BAY 6, BALTIMORE 2: Jeff Niemann gave up a run on six hits and struck out five in his major league debut. B.J. Upton hit a three-run homer during a six-run fifth for the host Rays.
• LOS ANGELES 10, SEATTLE 5: Jeff Mathis hit a two-run homer to lead a 16-hit attack for the Angels at Seattle. Joe Saunders held the Mariners to two runs on six hits, while walking three and striking out one in 5 1/3 innings. The Mariners scratched starting pitcher Erik Bedard because of inflammation in his left hip.
• TORONTO 5, TEXAS 4 (10): Joe Inglett drove in the tiebreaking run for the Blue Jays with a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning.
• COLORADO 13, ARIZONA 5: Clint Barmes, Matt Holliday and Garrett Atkins homered for the Rockies at Phoenix. The loss ended the NL West-leading Diamondbacks' eight-game winning streak.
• WASHINGTON 5, ATLANTA 4: Atlanta starter Tom Glavine left because of a strained right hamstring without getting an out, and the host Nationals made a 5-0 lead after three innings stand up. Atlanta rallied with three runs in the sixth on Chipper Jones' two-run homer and Jeff Francoeur's sacrifice fly, and one in the eighth on outfielder Wily Mo Pena's error. The Braves loaded the bases with two out in the ninth, but Brian McCann flied out to right.
• CHICAGO 6, PHILADELPHIA 5 (10): Second baseman Chase Utley's throwing error on what should have been an inning-ending double play allowed Ronny Cedeno to score the go-ahead run in the 10th inning for the Cubs at Philadelphia.
• MILWAUKEE 9, NEW YORK 7: Gabe Kapler homered for the second consecutive day, doubled twice and drove in three runs to lead Milwaukee at New York. Eric Gagne recorded his third save.
• HOUSTON 5, FLORIDA 1: Wandy Rodriguez struck out seven for the host Astros. J.R. Towles and Michael Bourn homered for Houston.
• PITTSBURGH 9, CINCINNATI 1: Ryan Doumit, Xavier Nady and Jason Bay homered for the host Pirates. Rookie Cincinnati righthander Johnny Cueto gave up five runs on five hits in six innings.
• SAN DIEGO 1, LOS ANGELES 0: Greg Maddux recorded his 349th career victory one day before his 42nd birthday. Paul McAnulty drove in the visiting Padres' only run with a sacrifice fly.
• SAN FRANCISCO 7, ST. LOUIS 4: Tim Lincecum struck out 11 in six innings for the host Giants. John Bowker became the first player in San Francisco history to hit a home run in his first two games.
