La Velle E. Neal III has covered baseball for the Star Tribune since 1998 (the post-Knoblauch era). Born and raised in Chicago, he grew up following the White Sox and hating the Cubs. He attended both the University of Illinois and Illinois-Chicago and began his baseball writing career at the Kansas City Star. He can be heard occasionally on KFAN radio, lending his great baseball mind to Paul Allen and other hosts. Mark Rosen borrows him occasionally for WCCO-TV.
CC Sabathia (no periods with the C's) is 15-8 with a 3.00 ERA in his career against the Twins. Back in the day, when he was with Cleveland, Sabathia would buzz Twins hitters when they bunted or even attempted to bunt on him.
By the looks of today's lineup, the Twins look like they want to try to get Sabathia riled up.
Josh Willingham's left shoulder is still sore. Justin Morneau is batting .140 in his career against Sabathia. So they are out. So is Trevor Plouffe who, according to Twins manager Ron Gardenhire, needs a day off.
So the Twins have a lineup that includes six players with a total of six home runs - and five of those are definitely piranha class.
Jamey Carroll is batting .375 this month. Alexi Casilla is 10-for-18 against Sabathia. So they'll go with the ambush lineup.
"We'll see if we can get him moving around the mound," Gardenhire said, "and straighten his cap."
Will it work? Stay tuned. If the Twins win, they will win their first season series against New York since 2001.
