When he's on, White Sox righthander Gavin Floyd has one of the majors' best curveballs, and after a three-week stint on the disabled list with a sore elbow, Floyd found it again. Detroit manager Jim Leyland said he'd never seen Floyd pitch better than he did Sept. 12. On Tuesday in Kansas City, Floyd retired 13 of the final 14 batters he faced. He hasn't had a dominant season since 2008, when he went 17-8 with a 3.84 ERA, but if he's on for his last three starts, that would help Chicago immensely.

Good third basemen are hard to find because teams expect so much of them, offensively and defensively. Kansas City's Mike Moustakas, 24, might not be an All-Star yet, but he entered Saturday with a 43-game errorless streak. In his first full season in the majors, he's fading offensively, but he was still batting .248 with 20 home runs and 72 RBI.

The Twins finished in last place a year ago, so finishing behind Cleveland wouldn't be a landmark issue. But the Indians are trying to avoid their first last-place finish since 1991, the year Mike Hargrove replaced John McNamara as manager.
