Many expected the Tigers to cruise to the division title with the White Sox hovering around .500.
That has not happened.
Chicago enters the final month of the season in first place, with Detroit playing the role of the underachiever.
Detroit just lost three one-run games in Kansas City, dropping its record in such games on the road to 6-11. Usually good teams find ways to win on the road, and the Tigers have failed to do that.
"The one thing I tell them in spring training -- and so far they've done that -- is, 'Let's get to September and be playing for something,'" Tigers manager Jim Leyland. "It looks like we are."

The Royals are trying Alex Gordon in the No. 3 spot in the lineup and, so far, like the results. In 13 games in the three hole, Gordon is batting .321 -- and that's after going hitless in his first eight at-bats. Gordon's 44 doubles heading into Friday had him on pace for 55, which would break the club record.

Cleveland entered the weekend only two games in front of the Twins for last place, so there's been speculation about the future of manager Manny Acta and others. "We have a lot of work to do, but their jobs aren't at stake with this," owner Paul Dolan said.
