Phil Miller covered three seasons of Twins baseball, but that was at a different ballpark for a different newspaper. Now Miller returns to the baseball beat after joining the Star Tribune as the Gopher football writer in 2010, and he won't miss the dingy dome for a minute. In addition to the Twins and Gophers, Miller covered the Utah Jazz and the NBA for six years at The Salt Lake Tribune.

Wimmers has Tommy John surgery; Mauer gets a rest

BOSTON -- Alex Wimmers, the Twins 2010 first-round draft pick, underwent Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery today.

The Twins had been expecting that news all week, but now at least he can look forward to making the same kind of recovery 2009 first-round pick Kyle Gibson has. Twins assistant GM Rob Antony said when he saw Gibson pitch the other day, it was the best Gibson has looked since the Twins drafted him.

There's hope that Gibson will be able to pitch in the Arizona Fall League.

Manager Ron Gardenhire hinted during the last homestand that Joe Mauer was probably going to get a day off once the team hit the road. That day has come. The Twins will open a four-game series at Fenway Park with Mauer on the bench.
