Swarzak lands on DL; Perdomo is latest arm

Anthony Swarzak had a 8.35 ERA as a starter but a 3.02 ERA as a reliever this season and was valuable because he could fill a variety of roles in the Twins bullpen.

But the righthander was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday because of a mild rotator cuff strain, forcing the Twins to make yet another change to their pitching staff.

Righthander Luis Perdomo was called up from Class AAA Rochester and will become the 23rd pitcher used by the club -- not including Drew Butera -- this season.

Perdomo, 28, was 2-1 with a 0.92 ERA and seven saves in 11 appearances for Rochester, with 18 strikeouts and two walks in 19 2/3 innings. He began the season at Class AA New Britain. In 36 games with the Padres the past two seasons, he went 1-0 with a 4.87 ERA.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Twins moved righthander Carl Pavano to the 60-day DL. This is not a big deal, as Pavano hasn't pitched since June 1 and won't be ready until sometime in August.

Speaking of Pavano

Pavano is on his way to Fort Myers, Fla., to continue his comeback from shoulder problems. He threw in the bullpen at Target Field on Wednesday with no problems.

"Headed to Fort Myers for the rest of the progression," he wrote in an e-mail. "Saturday, bullpen. Monday, batting practice."

Plouffe can play

Third baseman Trevor Plouffe apparently is healthy enough to play on Friday against the Indians. Plouffe, who missed the final five games of the Twins' 2-4 road trip because of a bruised thumb, took batting practice at Target Field on Thursday and apparently felt fine.

"Positivity goes a long way!" he wrote on his Twitter account (@TPlouffe24). "Looks like I'll be back on the field tomorrow. Thank you guys for all the love."

The Twins were prepared to place Plouffe on the disabled list if he wasn't ready to go on Friday. He is batting .259 with 19 home runs and 38 RBI.
