La Velle E. Neal III has covered baseball for the Star Tribune since 1998 (the post-Knoblauch era). Born and raised in Chicago, he grew up following the White Sox and hating the Cubs. He attended both the University of Illinois and Illinois-Chicago and began his baseball writing career at the Kansas City Star. He can be heard occasionally on KFAN radio, lending his great baseball mind to Paul Allen and other hosts. Mark Rosen borrows him occasionally for WCCO-TV.
Denard Span feels much better today and is back in the starting lineup, which is a good sign. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire did say that he will watch Span closely, as the high temperature is supposed to hit 102 today.
Span took himself out of the game on Saturday, which led many fans to believe that he had been traded. As it turned out, he wasn't. Welcome to the trade deadline. Just remember, if we get word of anything going down, we will let you know as soon as we can. I tried to let fans following on twitter know that we were waiting to learn more about Span, but that didn't stop some people having him dealt to the Yankees or other places.
Trevor Plouffe needs at least one more day to recover from his bruised thumb. He's available as a late-inning defensive replacement.
No word on when Justin Mourneau will return to the team after the birth of this son, Martin, on Saturday. He gets three days for paternity leave, which means he can be away from the team through Monday.
After that, the Twins must return a player to Class AAA Rochester. It doesn't automatically mean that it has to be Chris Parmelee, who was called up to fill in for Morneau. If Tuesday comes and Morneau isn't back with the team, they would have to play shorthanded. But I don't see that happening.
Oswaldo Arcia is the Twins minor league player of the week after batting .370 with 3 home runs and 13 RBI in eight games. Two of those home runs came on Friday.
Mauer stat of the day: Joe Mauer is 5-for-9 with a homer in his career against Royals righthander Jeremy Guthrie.
The Twins will face Gavin Floyd, Jose Quintana and Jake Peavy in Chicago.
And a very happy anniversary to Joe C. and Mrs. Joe C.!!
