TWINS UPDATE

Monday's off day was well-timed, as the bullpen pitched nine scoreless innings in Sunday's 5-4, 15-inning victory over Milwaukee. The Twins went 4-5 in a disappointing homestand against the Cubs, Phillies and Brewers. Once again, the main problem was the rotation, as their starting pitchers went 2-4 with a 6.04 ERA. Diamond allowed four runs over six innings in Thursday's 6-1 loss to Philadelphia.

PIRATES UPDATE

Pitching has kept them in contention, but the Pirates had the lowest-scoring offense in the majors, averaging 3.24 runs per game, before scoring nine runs Saturday and Sunday against Cleveland. Third baseman Pedro Alvarez, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2008 draft, was batting only .189 before hitting two home runs in each of those weekend victories. Correia gave up four earned runs over six innings Wednesday in a 7-1 loss at Baltimore.
