Rare air for Cain

Matt Cain's perfect game against Houston on Wednesday was the majors' fifth no-hitter this season, but it was in a class all its own. Using the game-score stat -- which factors innings pitched, runs, hits, strikeouts and walks -- Cain's start goes down as baseball's best since Kerry Wood's 20-strikeout one hitter against the Astros in 1998. Wood's game score was 105, Cain's (which included 14 strikeouts) was 101. For comparison, Jered Weaver got a 95 for his no-hitter against the Twins on May 2.

Dickey has All-Star stuff

Mets knuckleballer R.A. Dickey received a 95 game score for his one-hitter against the Rays on Wednesday. The outing included 12 strikeouts and no walks and left him 10-1 with a 2.20 ERA on the season. The former Twin could become the first knuckleballer to start the All-Star Game. He's one of the National League's leading candidates, along with Cain, Lance Lynn and Gio Gonzalez.

Harper and Trout for All-Star

Outfielders Bryce Harper and Mike Trout aren't on the All-Star ballot because they started the season in the minors, but there's no question both should be part of the mid-summer classic. Harper, 19, entered Saturday batting .302 with a .381 on-base percentage and .541 slugging percentage for the Nationals. Trout, 20, was batting .333 with a .393 OBP and .529 slugging for the Angels.
