Reds manager Dusty Baker rekindled an old feud with Indians pitcher Derek Lowe last Wednesday, admitting he had Mat Latos throw a brushback pitch at Lowe as payback for Lowe drilling Joey Votto in 2009. Lowe said there was another incident four years ago with Baker and "people almost got fired over it." Baker said "there was probably a good chance [Lowe] was drinking at the ballpark" back then, affecting his memory. Both refused to elaborate, but it should be interesting Monday, when Lowe makes his next start -- against the Reds.
Jose Quintana has been to the White Sox what Scott Diamond has been to the Twins, a lefthanded pitcher jumping into the rotation and showing remarkable poise while posting a sub-2.00 ERA. John Danks (left shoulder soreness) isn't quite ready to return from the DL, but when he does, Manager Robin Ventura might have to pull Philip Humber from the rotation in the same year he pitched a perfect game.
The Tigers entered last weekend at 26-31, a stunning low point for the consensus preseason pick to win the AL Central. But they went 4-2 on the road against the Reds and Cubs, marking the first time they'd won back-to-back series since the first two series of the season.
