Born: July 15, 1991 (age 20)
Stats: 9-1, 2.37 ERA, 14 G, 110 IP, 88 H, 31 R, 29 ER, 24 BB, 116 K
Scouting report: His fastball, slider and changeup are all above average. His fastball hits 95-96 miles per hour and has touched 99, but it lacks movement, allowing hitters to square it up more than you would expect. Still, he has been able to maintain his velocity deep into his outings. He played high school basketball and is a good athlete with wiry strength. He has a clean, repeatable delivery, which helps him throw strikes consistently.
Twins should take him because: He's good now and still has upside. He wasn't a starting pitcher at Monte Vista (Calif.) High school or as a freshman at Stanford but came on strong the past two years. He's 7-0 with a 2.05 ERA and three complete games in the always-tough Pac-12 Conference, and he's a model citizen.
Twins should pass because: Appel might have the talent but might not have the fierce competitive drive it takes to become a true ace. His adviser is Scott Boras, who will fight to get top dollar, even if the slot recommendation for the No. 2 pick is $6.2 million. And Stanford's coaching staff let him throw 149 pitches in one start this year.
