Twins CEO Jim Pohlad made a rare on-field appearance during batting practice before Monday's game against the Angels and had a brief conversation with manager Ron Gardenhire.

"Nobody wants to win more Gardy and [General Manager Terry Ryan]," Pohlad said.

Asked if the team's slow start could prompt ownership to fire people, Pohlad said: "Those kind of decisions are up to Gardy and Terry. We made a major move in the offseason with the GM [firing Bill Smith and replacing him with Ryan]. And beyond that, whatever happens is up to these guys. But we don't say to them, 'Make heads roll.'

"We wish it were that simple, too. I'm not sure what the answer is, but it's probably not a simple answer."

The Twins are known for their stability.

"We know and you know that from year to year, all sorts of teams are going to through ups and downs," Pohlad said. "And if you reacted in a knee-jerk way, that could really affect the long-term. If we reacted to those things, we'd have chaos in the organization. You wouldn't be able to retain people. You wouldn't be able to attract people. And so, no, you can't do that."

New infield plan

Brian Dozier arrived from Class AAA Rochester and moved right into the No. 2 spot in the batting order, starting at shortstop. Gardenhire said Jamey Carroll and Alexi Casilla will both move around, playing second base and some third base.

Casilla injured his right shoulder on a diving play in Seattle, so he wasn't in the lineup Monday. Carroll, who started the first 27 games at shortstop and was hitting .208, started at second base.

Gardenhire met with Carroll before the game.

"He understood totally," Gardenhire said. "He's done it his whole career. He's played everywhere. He's played very well at shortstop for us, and I wanted him to know that this is not a demotion. That young man has played great for us, but our best player down there [at Class AAA Rochester] has been Mr. Dozier."

Heading to the Show

Scott Diamond, who will start Tuesday's game for the Twins, had no idea he was getting called back to the big leagues Friday, so he was pretty upset to see a reliever warming in the bullpen during the third inning of his start for Rochester. When Red Wings manager Gene Glynn went to shake his hand after that inning, Diamond realized he was getting pulled but wasn't sure why.

"[Glynn] was standing there with his hand extended, and I was really starting to get heated," Diamond said. "Then he's like, 'No, no it's because you're going up [to the majors]."

Dozier learned about his promotion after Saturday's doubleheader, while the rest of the Rochester squad was getting ready to leave for Pawtucket, R.I.

"I'm making a taco and after the game -- Cinco de Mayo, we had taco spread after the game -- then [Glynn] said, 'Congratulations to Scott [Diamond]. He's about to leave.' And he says, 'Oh, yeah, Dozier, pack your bags. You're going with him, too.' I'm looking around hoping nobody else's name is Dozier."

Etc.

• The Twins demoted outfielder Joe Benson to Class AA New Britain, making room at Rochester for Clete Thomas, who cleared waivers. One of the Twins' top prospects, Benson hit .179 in 28 games at Rochester.

• Josh Willingham wasn't in the Twins lineup because of a skin condition around his mouth, but he hoped to be available off the bench, Ryan said. Newcomer Erik Komatsu started in left field.
